The work was commissioned by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), and carried out by Central Environmental Surveys (CES) during November 2003. The purpose of this data capture was to map the dry heath, wet heath and blanket bog habitats, including condition classes of these, within the Cadair Idris cSAC to a uniform specification. These employed various classifications, and a uniform survey was required to provide specific information designed to the meet the needs of habitat condition assessment and management. Following the completion of the mapping phase, a second phase of the project involved laying a series of permanent plots for monitoring the condition of the vegetation within selected mapping units. The latter also involved taking baseline recordings of these plots. The type, location and size of these monitoring plots was determined during discussions with Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) staff prior to commencing the second, monitoring phase. During the mapping phase of the project the vegetation was assessed by dividing each of the three principal (Annex I) habitat categories into sub-categories which highlight the main impacts on vegetation condition, such as bracken invasion, dominance of negative indicators such as Juncus squarrosus, Molinia or Eriophorum vaginatum, or impacts of specific events such as heather burn.
