Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Vertigo geyeri in Waun Eurad and Cors Erddreiniog SACs (2003-2007)
Geyers whorl Snail, Vertigo geyeri is listed on Annex II of the European Union Habitats and Species Directive, classified in the British Red Data Book as RDB1 (Endangered), and is on the list of priority species of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). The purpose of this study was to undertake monitoring of the Vertigo geyeri population at Waun Eurad and Cors Erddreiniog, in order to carry out a condition assessment and to determine the attributes that will be assessed by future monitoring, which is a requirement of the EU Habitats and Species Directive.

The monitoring of condition followed the common standards approach outlined by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, and the methodology and approach was an adaptation of the monitoring protocol developed for a cSAC in northern England. Condition of the snail population and its habitat at Waun Eurad was carried out by measuring environmental variables and snail numbers at intervals along two linear transects (64m and 105m in length). The attributes used to assess Condition were: - Area of occupancy of Vertigo geyeri habitat in both transects - Area of occupancy of Vertigo geyeri in both transects - Number of overall positive recordings per number of field samples - Hydrological field assessment Condition at Cors Erddreiniog was assessed by a survey of the compartments of the site where V. geyeri had been previously recorded or supported suitable habitat, plus a more detailed survey of the area where V. geyeri had been recorded most often. The attributes used to assess Condition were as based on area of occupancy of snail habitat, area of occupancy of snail, number of overall positive recordings per number of field samples, and hydrological field assessment.
