Bangor University School of Ocean Science (SOS) Prince Madog Towed Video Survey in Liverpool Bay (2012)
This Natural Resources Wales (NRW) owned dataset contains the species data associated with drop down video survey conducted by Bangor University. Surveys of seabed in Liverpool Bay, carried out by the School of Ocean Sciences (SOS), Bangor University, in June and October 2012, as part of European Fisheries Fund (EFF) funded research into fisheries and seabed habitats. This dataset is derived only from drop-down video (9 tows) and associated still images collected by SOS from the RV Prince Madog, using a sledge with combined video cameras and stills camera. The survey area was between 8 and 22 km offshore, north east of Anglesey. The tow lengths ranged from 100m to 500m and seabed consisted primarily of sands, gravels and pebbles with some areas of cobbles. The videos were analysed by Coastal Assessment, Liaison and Monitoring (CALM) to describe the seabed habitats and communities and assign them to biotopes. The main aim of the survey work by the School of Ocean Sciences was to assess the characteristics and status of offshore benthic habitats, as part of a study on the effects of scallop dredging. The aim of the subsequent data capture was to improve Countryside Council for Wales (CCW's) seabed habitat mapping for Liverpool Bay and assign biotopes. CCW now forms part of NRW.

Drop-down video tows were carried out with various combinations of a standard resolution digital video camera, a GoPro video camera and a stills camera attached to a sledge towed behind RV Prince Madog. Standard video was recorded onto .VOB files. GoPro video footage was recorded onto MP4 files. Stills camera images are .JPG files. The arrangement of the videos and cameras is described as follows: The middle width of the GoPro videos is about 96cm for the ones that are at an angle (80 at the bottom and >112 at the top) while the ones which face straight down are 80 cm wide. The still camera is a Canon 400D, with field of view of ca. 0.13m2 (44cm by 30cm). The middle width of the videos on the CDs are 41cm. A manual log was kept of the position and time at the start and end of transect while the camera was on the bottom. Videos and images were analysed by a marine biological surveyor (Jen Jones) to record information on habitat character, conspicuous species and their abundance. Habitat descriptions and assignment of biotopes from the national biotope classification to each record were also recorded. Analysis included a QA process to validate and verify the recorded data. Part of this dataset is sensitive and restricted. The sensitive data is as follows: Pecten maximus and Aequipecten opercularis Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties.
