Fisher Towed Survey in Cardigan Bay 2012
Surveys of seabed in Cardigan Bay, carried out by the School of Ocean Sciences (SOS), Bangor University, in October 2012, as part of European Fisheries Fund (EFF) funded research into fisheries and seabed habitats. The main aim of the survey work was to assess the characteristics and status of offshore benthic habitats, and primarily whether cobble reef habitat was present, as part of a study on the effects of scallop dredging.

Drop-down video tows were carried out with a GoPro video camera attached to a mini-sled towed behind a fishing boat. Continuous video footage was recorded onto MP3 files. A manual log was kept of the position and time at the start and end of transect while the camera was on the bottom. The tow lengths ranged from 150m to 1206m and seabed consisted primarily of sands and gravels with some pebbles and cobbles. Videos were analysed by a marine biological surveyor to record information on habitat character, conspicuous species and their abundance. The videos were analysed by Coastal Assessment, Liaison and Monitoring (CALM) to describe the seabed habitats and communities and assign them to biotopes. Analysis by CALM staff estimated abundance of all identifiable taxa using the SACFOR abundance scale. Habitat descriptions and assignment of biotopes from the national biotope classification to each record were also recorded. Analysis included a QA process to validate and verify the recorded data.
