Marine Monitoring Drop-Down Video around North Llyn Special Area of Conservation ( SAC ) 2012
Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are strictly protected sites designated under the EC Habitats Directive. The Habitats Directive has a list of habitat types and species that are considered to be most in need of conservation at a European level (excluding birds, which are covered under the EC Birds Directive). Once sites have been designated, the country agencies work with owners, occupiers and others to secure their management and protection regime. This dataset provides a continuation of data collected from Drop Down Video Monitoring in Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SAC. The purpose of this data capture was to inform management decisions within the SACs. QA was undertaken including 5% of tows being re-analysed by a differernt surveyor and QA of at least 10% of data entry. Analysis and QA undertaken by Marine EcoSol.

In June 2012 the Countryside Council for Wales undertook video tows for routine monitoring within the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation. Video was collected using a bespoke C-technics C-Vision Mantis HD video camera towed on a sledge from CCW's research vessel, Pedryn. Photographic stills (using a Canon 600/DD stills camera) were taken every 8 seconds along to tow to assist with habitat validation and utilised to inform species identification and augment species lists. Video was analysed for habitats, species and biotopes by Marine EcoSol using standard Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) derived techniques and JNCC Marine Habitat Classification. Data was later entered into Marine Recorder by Marine EcoSol. GIS vessel tracks were exported from Boat GPS. GIS Start and end points and field notes also supplied.
