Across Wales Drop-Down Video Monitoring: Additional North Llyn Ground Truthing (2012)
Drop down video ground-truthing of additional Modiolus bed discovered partially outside the Special Area of Conservation (SAC). This follows on from previous ground-truthing carried out in 2011 (project 313). Analysis and Marine Recorder entry to be undertaken later in the year under Data Capture call-off contract. The purpose of this data capture was to conduct a ground truthing exercise through which the extent and quality of Modiolus mussel beds could be assessed in an area of the coast of the Llyn Peninsula, North Wales.

This follows on from previous ground-truthing carried out in 2011 (project 313): Across Wales drop-down video monitoring, 2012: North Llyn ground truthing. Drop-down video is useful for gathering large volumes of data across wide areas of seabed and often to depths beyond which diver observations can be safely made. Detailed methods and site location are described in CCW Marine Monitoring report 24a. Amendments to the previous methods include the addition of a HD video camera system manufactured by C-Technics in place of the SD camera previously used. A Cannon EOS 400D digital SLR was also used in a housing manufactured by Rovtech systems. Photographic stills were taken every 11 seconds along the tows to assist with species and habitat validation. GIS vessel tracks exported from Boat GPS. GIS Start and end points and field notes also supplied.
