Harvest Mice (Micromys minutus) in Wales - Where Might They Be?
The Harvest mouse (Micromys minutus), Britain’s smallest rodent, is sparsely distributed in Wales. The harvest mouse is a UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority species and is also on the list of Species of Principal Importance in Wales (Section 42, Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006). Thus the species is afforded a high conservation status, yet very little is known about its true distribution across the UK and especially Wales. This dataset is a collation of records obtained from a report written to question 'Harvest mice in Wales - where might they be?'. The work carried out and demonstrated in the associated report (see related titles) was motivated by the lack of data for the harvest mouse in Wales, in an attempt to try and understand whether the species was as sparsely spread as the data would suggest. The results from analysis of the data would act to target harvest mouse survey to areas most likely to discover new populations and confirm existing ones. This dataset is made up of harvest mouse data obtained from the Welsh Local Records Centres, comprising 139 records dating back to 1895, with fewer than 30 records since 2000. Records are scattered across lowland areas in north, west and south Wales, forming obvious clusters in areas such as North Pembrokeshire, Bridgend and Eastern Glamorgan. The purpose of this data capture was to try gain an understanding of the distribution of harvest mouse around Wales. Various data were analysed alongside the harvest mouse records to highlight areas where potential harvest mouse surveys could be targeted. Maps were produced, to highlight sites with the highest habitat ranking around the most recent harvest mouse records.

Data analysis involved the selection of a range of habitats suitable for harvest mouse from Phase 1 Habitat Survey for Wales and National Vegetation Classification (NVC) data. These data were selected within a 10 kilometre radius of the most recent (post 1980) harvest mouse records. An altitudinal threshold was set to remove all harvest mouse suitable habitat above 300 metres. The resultant habitat data were associated with grassland connectivity network data, to create a series of sites which summarised the percentage area of suitable harvest mouse habitat for each site. Analysis was carried out across Wales and identified 479 core grassland connectivity sites and a further 1208 focal grassland connectivity sites, with at least some suitable harvest mouse habitat. Each site was assigned a ranking based on the amount of combined Phase 1 and NVC harvest mouse suitable habitat.
