Sensitive Marine Habitats Data Derived from Stereo Baited Remote Underwater Video System (2012)
This dataset was collected using Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUV). This was the first known study of its kind in temperate waters and involved extensive method development. The BRUV surveys collected information on fish assemblages over three sensitive habitats (kelp, seagrass meadows and horse mussels). Surveys took places in the coastal waters off North Wales (Llyn Peninsula) and South Wales (Pembrokeshire), within Special Areas of Conservation as designated under the EU Habitats Directive. BRUVs were used as a non-destructive and non-invasive method to assess fish communities within Wales. This project was aimed as investigating the fish species assemblages present in each habitat type and determine the age structure of these.

52 hours of footage were captured and fish assemblages were assess in three sensitive habitats; kelp (Laminaria digitata) , seagrass beds (Zostera marina, a UK BAP Priority Habitat) and horse mussels beds (Modiolus modiolus). BRUV systems were deployed for 2 and 6 hours in order to determine the optimum amount of time the BRUV needed to be deployed temperate waters. Calibrated stereo video cameras were used in order to make accurate length measurements of commercially important fish species. It took an average of 7 minutes for fish to first settle in front of the camera system and a total of 18 families including 15 different species were recorded from the three sensitive habitats. Different fish species assemblages were recorded in each of the different habitats with only poor cod (Trisopterus minutus) and dogfish (Scyliorhinadae) detected in all three habitats. The following questions were addressed with regards to the methodological approach. 1. Can BRUVs be used to investigate key ecological parameters within fish communities in temperate waters? a. Any problems of using these systems in temperate waters compared to tropical waters? b. Do amendments need to be performed to the systems to allow for sampling around the Welsh coast? c. What is the adequate amount of time a BRUV should be deployed for? 2. Do the specialised software packages produce accurate and reliable results when identifying and measuring the length of taxa in variable visibility? a. Does the shape or bend of a fish affect the length measurement? b. Which length measurement of a taxa produces the most reliable result? 3. Can we assess fish communities in three different types of sensitive habitats? a. Are there species or abundance differences between these habitats?
