Site Condition Assessment of Welsh Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) Standing Water features (2007 - 2012)
A report and supporting data was commissioned by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) in 2011 to provide an assessment of the current conservation status of 23, mostly oligotrophic Welsh standing waterbodies. These lie within six different Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). The data have been used to generate site-specific condition assessments. The collection of survey data and preparation of the site condition assessments broadly follows the methods detailed in the Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) Guidance (JNCC, 2005). The lakes are assessed every 6 years. The data contributes the the report \Site condition assessments of Welsh SAC and SSSI standing water features 2007-2012\"."

Condition assessments have been prepared for each of the 23 lakes. The Lakes within 6 SAC's across Wales were as follows; Eryri/Snowdonia; Migneint-Arenig-Dduallt; Rhinog; Cadair Idris; Elenydd and Corsydd Môn SAC. Assessments follow common standards guidance (JNCC 2005) but have regard to the site-specific conservation objectives for each site. Required data including aquatic macrophyte surveys and physico-chemical data were collated and are summarised for each lake. Any issues with data confidence are discussed. Trophic scores (TRS and PLEX) have been calculated and are discussed. Reference is made to previous surveys and historic records where available and management and monitoring recommendations are provided. The data collation is a continuation of work carried out as part of CCW Contract Science Report 705, \Burgess et al. (2006) Site Condition Assessments of Welsh SAC and SSSI Standing Water Features\". The data for the current assessments may not be perfect but it is the best that has been available for lake monitoring in Wales to-date. The dataset is larger more extensive and generally of higher quality than that available for previous assessment rounds. Furthermore the QA processes involved and use of best practice where possible increases the robustness of the dataset which in turn increases confidence in the status outcomes of the current round of condition assessments."
