Vegetated Shingle Habitats
This is a spatial dataset showing the boundary of shingle habitats and the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) equivalent code. A GIS layer was generated in 2012 from paper maps from the 1993 JNCC report by Sneddon and Randall. The purpose of this data capture is to generate an electronic version of the data and make it easily available for reporting purposes.

Mapping was conducted in Wales between May and June 1989. Digitisation of the data was carried out between June and August 2012. The paper maps were scanned and geo-referenced to OS Mastermap products. Polygons were snapped to OS Mastermap where hard boundaries exist. Where a habitat boundary followed a feature not present on an OS base map then the scanned images was followed. All areas were calculated from the GIS map. Habitat and site boundary maps were digitised to CCW NVC data standards. The surveys focused on the vegetation of stony banks and did not attempt to map strandline communities; therefore the site boundary is not a true representation of the extent of the Shingle Ridge. Many of the sites have changed since the paper maps were first produced. No attempt has been made to re-map the habitats to take account of temporal changes. All data was validated against the original map and topologically cleaned.
