Coastal Vegetated Shingle Structures of Wales
A survey of Coastal Vegetated Shingle Ridges of Great Britain was commissioned in 1987 by the Nature Conservancy Council. The project provides a classification of the main shingle plant communities found on stable or semi-stable structures in Great Britain and was published by Joint Nature Conservation Council (JNCC) in four parts. The data was captured in an attempt to describe the size, location and quality of the Vegetated Shingle Ridges. The surveys focused on the vegetation of stony banks and did not attempt to map strandline communities; therefore the site boundary is not a true representation of the extent of the Shingle Ridge. An overall report which combines all data to determine which plant communities are found on shingle at a national level and how these related to existing National Vegetation Classification (NVC) communities, a map and a description of the major plant communities recorded at each of the sites.

The first stage of the project identified sites comprising of shingle structures and beaches supported a permanent flora above the strandline. Each site was surveyed within a framework of the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) using techniques recommended for that methodology. Maps were based on either 1:10,000 maps of the sites or aerial photography if available. These field maps were used in conjunction with TWINSPAN analysis on plant communities to create specific shingle ridge communities which were mapped onto the final map in detail. JNCC publish electronic versions of the report on their website. They also provide a cross tabulation spreadsheet between the Coastal Vegetated Shingle communities defined by Sneddon and Randall (1994) and the NVC Classification. In 2012 Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) created vector GIS layers of the Welsh shingle habitat maps. These form 3 appendices, one for each Wales, England and Scotland. The data described here only relates to Appendix 1 - Wales.
