SAC Monitoring: Lamprey in the River Tywi (2011)
River lamprey, Brook lamprey and Sea lamprey are listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive (EU Directive on the Conservation of Natural Habitats of Wild Fauna and Flora 92/43/EEC). There are six rivers in Wales designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) for lamprey, including the Afon Tywi in West Wales. Natural Resources Wales is responsible for monitoring the condition of lamprey species populations within SACs and to ensure the maintenance of favourable conservation status within designated sites. The data, collected and contracted out by former Countryside Council for Wales, is used to assess the population attribute for all three lamprey species. Sampling was carried out between the 5th October and 22nd November 2011. A total of 30 sites distributed within the Tywi catchments were selected between Llandovery and Carmarthen.
