Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Lamprey in the River Dee (2011)
River, Brook and Sea Lamprey are a designated (Annex II) feature of the River Dee Special Area of Conservation. The purpose of this data collection was to assess the conservation status of the Annex II features, including species composition, distribution, abundance and size class composition are of particular interest as an indication of Condition Assessment. Monitoring was undertaken on the Dee Catchment in 2011.

In 2011 monitoring is a continuation of data collected in 2004, which included the capture of historical records from 1985 onwards. Electrofishing methodologies were used. Following the LIFE protocol, where possible, surveys were carried out in both optimal and sub-optimal habitat at each site. Habitats were surveyed quantitatively using an enclosed area as a barrier to fish movement. Where possible a 1 m2 quadrat, enclosed with 2 mm fine mesh netting was positioned over the selected habitat at each survey site and then left to settle. At sub optimal sites a complete 1 m2 area of habitat was often not present. In this case several areas of sub optimal habitat were sampled within the 100 m stretch to represent a combined area of 1 m2. Under these circumstances a quadrat was not used to enclose the sample area. Electric fishing was undertaken within the quadrat in such a way as to draw individual lamprey out of the sediment rather than stunning and trapping them in the silt. The anode was energised in short bursts of 20 seconds followed by 5 second gaps. This was carried out over a two minute period. This procedure was classed as a single run, which in optimal habitats was subsequently repeated at least twice within the same quadrat (with a five minute gap between runs). In sub-optimal habitats a single run was carried out at each site.
