Spatial modelling was used to evaluate the environmental parameters that dictate where the species is able to persist in the UK and to identify areas of high conservation value. The purpose of this data capture for Countryside Council for Wales was to assess and predict the distribution of the species around Wales. The models were created and used my Matthew Zeale, a PhD student at the time. The PhD findings from the models indicated that B. barbastellus is highly dependent on large areas of native mature woodland and is limited in its distribution predominantly by summer climate, although a number of other environmental factors also appear to be important. The data collation and survey undertaken by experienced bat biologist. The results were later submitted as part of a PhD Thesis.
