Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Shad Egg Survey on the River Wye (2011)
The River Wye rises on Plynlimon in the Cambrian Mountains and flows in a generally south-easterly direction to enter the Severn Estuary at Chepstow. The river is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the Habitats Directive for several features, including salmon, lampreys and shads. Twaite (Alosa fallax) and allis (Alosa alosa) shad. In Britain, significant populations of twaite shad are known to spawn in the Rivers Severn, Wye, Usk and Tywi. However, it is not certain whether a breeding population of allis shad still exists. The population of both species are threatened in Europe mainly due to obstructions to migration and water quality issues. The purpose of this data capture was to make an assessment of Conservation Status by summarising previous data held at the site, conducting a baseline survey and compare these with results from previous datasets. Along the length of the welsh portion of the River Wye from Builth Wells to Monmouth. The survey was conducted in May, June and July of 2011.

Environment Agency Wales (EAW) and Countryside Council for Wales, recorded egg survey data are available for six years on the River Wye, although widespread sampling data are only available for 1999, 2003 and 2004. The standard Hillman et al. (2003) methodology was amended to reduce the sampling required at sites where shad eggs were present. This enabled the JNCC (2005) target to be assessed and many more sites to be surveyed within the time available. Confidence in this dataset is high.
