Application of Phase 1 Intertidal Survey Techniques to Monitoring
This dataset is part of the 1999 monitoring trials that became the basis for Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC) monitoring in Wales; Countryside Council for Wales' (CCW's) Marine Monitoring Report No1. 'The establishment of a programme of surveillance and monitoring for judging the condition of the features of Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau". Relating to section 3.4.2 This was important for the notification of protected sites and also for planning conservation management. The purpose of this data capture was to support the designation and conservation planning of protected sites. The purpose of condition monitoring on the site is essential to provide information which enables judgements to be made about whether the favourable condition of the features of interest for which this site was designated is is being achieved and so unable judgements to be made about the appropriateness of site management. This programme of survey has been stimulated by the EC habitats directive SAC designation requirements because the implementation of the directive requires that appropriate adjacent intertidal land must be notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) before it can be included as part of an SAC. Historically intertidal marine SSSIs have been notified on an ad hoc basis in Wales. However it was recognised a large scale notification of SSSIs linked to the habitats directive would need to be part of a series of sites covered a range of intertidal communities in Wales. In addition to this it was recognised that map data for the intertidal within the SACs would be invaluable for site management including sensitivity mapping and as a basis from which to develop future monitoring. This dataset forms part of the Intertidal SAC monitoring program.

The resolution of Marine Intertidal Phase 1 mapping lies between Phase 1 Terrestrial Mapping and Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) Phase 2 Marine Survey methodologies. During Marine Intertidal Phase 1 mapping, surveyors walk along the shore in order to identify and map the extent and distribution of biotopes. Surveys were undertaken by a range of surveyors using a rapid assessment methodology. This information is recorded onto a copy of an aerial photograph taken at low water. The rough maps produced are transferred onto GIS where the biotope polygons are colour-coded. Biotope identification is carried out in the field and, in addition, species are listed. The technique has been developed to be rapid and emphasis is placed on spatial information. During the present study the development of marine phase 1 survey was modified to suit the monitoring application. In order to report on the condition of an estuary a number of attributes require monitoring. 1) The relative proportion of muddy and sandy communities. 2) The distribution of major communities within the estuary. Phase 1 survey techniques were trialled using a 200 m grid. Some additional sampling locations were added to the grid to take account of rare or otherwise important biotopes not covered by the grid (minor biotopes). Biotope extent and distribution were mapped to aerial photos and GIS by surveyors, sometimes using the GPS locations.
