Beach Sediment Particle Size for 10 Welsh Beaches (Collected 2010/2011)
Beaches in Wales are important for several reasons, including as a major 'attractor' of relevance to the tourist industry and local, regional and national economies. The Welsh Coast is vitally important to the tourism industry in Wales. The purpose of this data capture was to provide details of the types and properties of sediment on Welsh beaches to inform the Beach Nourishment in Wales Phase 2 project. 10 beaches were chosen during the Beach Nourishment in Wales Pilot Study project which included both sand and mixed sand/shingle systems located around the coasts of North, West and South Wales and which reflect varying relative importance of touristic / recreational, flood and erosion risk management and nature conservation interests.

Samples containing little or no gravel were dried and homogenised. Particle size analysis of the gravel fraction was determined by dry sieving at 'half phi intervals' on 300 mm diameter mesh sieves. Particle size analysis of the sand fraction was determined by dry sieving at 'quarter phi intervals' on 200 mm diameter mesh sieves. Where samples contained a significant quantity of mud, samples were initially wet sieved, and particle size analysis of the mud fraction performed by laser diffraction. All data were exported to the GRADISTAT (Blott and Pye, 2001) computer program to calculate the sample statistics. Samples were collected during 2010 and 2011. The 10 beaches selected in Wales includes Talacre, Abergele-Pensarn, Traeth Crugan, Morfa Dyffryn, Broadwater-Aberdovey, Tenby North Beach, Port Eynon Bay, NW Swansea Bay, Baglan-Aberavon, Porthcawl Data collected by professionals using standard methodologies.
