With the exception of Llyn Bodlyn, all the sites are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), with the majority also being within Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). These surveys were undertaken as part of a wider project commissioned by the Environment Agency to meet obligations under the Water Framework Directive and provide a measure of site condition assessment for SSSI's. The work was commissioned by the Environment Agency and funded in part by former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW). Work was conducted by ENSIS- ECRC. Where possible, submerged plants were surveyed using a bathyscope, but a double-headed rake was used in deeper water or where poor water clarity restricted visibility. All survey sections and boat transects were recorded using Global Positioning System (GPS) and backed up with digital photographs. For unknown or taxonomically ambiguous species, vouchers were collected, appropriately preserved and identified in the laboratory. Stoneworts and bladderwort species were sent for identification by Nick Stewart all other voucher determinations were made by Ben Goldsmith. For sites commissioned exclusively by CCW, species were scored as presence or absent for each 10m subsection of the 100 m survey section. The other sites (EA WDF monitoring sites) used the original EA method, which scores the marginal species in a 1-3 abundance scale for the entire section.
