Intertidal Monitoring of Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Beds in Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) 2010
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. Seagrass beds develop in intertidal and shallow subtidal areas on sands and muds. They may be found in marine inlets and bays but also in other areas, such as lagoons and channels, which are sheltered from significant wave action. Eelgrass (Zostera marina), is considered to be scarce (present in 16-100 ten km squares) is protected through the EC Habitats Directive and is classed as a UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Priority Habitat. Data is captured to support reporting on conservation status of the Pen Llyn air Sarnau SAC.

The Zostera marina beds were mapped using the tracking facility on the GPS receivers, although on 14th July the tide failed to expose more than the uppermost plants in the diffuse bed. Digital photographs were also taken at points of interest during all Z. marina surveys. Whilst the perimeter of the Porth Dinllaen bed was being mapped, several pairs of surveyors walked north/south transects along the bed on the beach. The surveyors assessed quadrats at regular intervals noting Zostera density, substratum type, abundance of core taxa and presence/ absence of lesser taxa. The transects surveyed at Porth Dinllaen were worked using handheld GPS receivers. All survey completed by professional and experienced marine field surveyors. Data quality and confidence considered high. Intertidal SAC monitoring, previous work was also carried out in 2009 and 2008.
