Intertidal Monitoring of Rockpools, Caves and Overhangs in Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 2008
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. Rockpools, overhangs and caves have been identified as important elements of the 'large shallow inlets and bays' feature and of Sites of Special Scientific Interest. These potentially species rich rocky habitats were surveyed in Carmarthen Bay to provide an inventory and to fully characterise these sub-features. The purpose of this data capture was to provide an inventory and distribution map of selected biotopes and species inventory across South Wales.

A brief description of the habitat and community(s) present within each feature was recorded in situ. These descriptions typically included the size of the feature, its level on the shore, the dominant and characterising species or taxa, and other notable features of condition or potential anthropogenic impacts. Photographs were taken to illustrate each feature. Species lists were taken for each of the features studied.
