Similarly under Section 42 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities (NERC) Act, 2006 it is required that the a 'list of the living organisms and types of habitat which in the Assembly's opinion are of principal importance for the purpose of conserving biodiversity'. The UK BAP is one of the main focuses of this work. As part of the UK's commitment to the 1992 CBD and NERC Act there have been a number of initiatives to identify those species and habitats whose UK populations may be under threat and to establish plans to reduce those threats and thereby maintain biodiversity. The list includes all marine UK BAP priorities as well as additional habitats and species to reflect those in need of conservation action in Wales. For each species and habitat data provided it should include a map of the distribution around the Welsh coast and supporting text with information on the ecology, rarity, legislative protection, occurrence in statutory sites and known threats. This data was captured to contribute towards providing all public bodies and Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) partnerships with information on the marine habitats and species included in the Section 42 list. This work included intertidal habitat searches for biotopes in the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) Phase 1 dataset, done using 1997 biotope classification codes. Biotopes associated with 'Section 42' habitats were compiled using the 2004 biotope codes. Subtidal habitats were plotted using records of biotopes and/or species from Marine Recorder (Snapshot data dated November 2007). The data collation included the use of Marine Recorder to query the plot distribution of six chosen species. Habitats were plotted from sources such as CCW Phase 1 spatially (GIS) mapped biotope layers, and target notes. The validity of records were checked. Records that were considered doubtful due to the habitat, geographic location and known inexperience of the recorder, were checked thoroughly and excluded if not corroborated.
