Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra) Summary Statistics and Distribution Analysis for Carmarthen Bay 1998 - 2010
Carmarthen Bay, an extensive, shallow embayment off the south coast of Wales, UK, encompasses a wide range of rich and diverse coastal and marine habitats. Carmarthen Bay is an internationally important wintering ground for the Common Scoter duck (Melanitta nigra) and is widely regarded as the most important such site in the UK causing the site to be proposed as a Special Protection Area (pSPA) under the EC Birds Directive. Former Countryside Council for Wales (now part of Natural Resources Wales) have supported ground and aerial based surveys for a 10 year period since the Sea Empress oil spill in 1996. The purpose of this data capture was to collate and synthesise records on common scoter populations and distributions for a 10 year period. Data was collated from old CCW reports. A summary of the data has been produced to cover the period 1998 to 2010.

A sustained program of monitoring common scoters in Carmarthen Bay has been in place since 1997. Data is published in five CCW Marine Monitoring Reports (no. 11, 48, 64, 83, 84). Details Although data was collected using a standard method, data display, format and analysis varied with each data collection contract. Methods used to continue the program of aerial and ground-based survey were broadly similar to those reported in 2002, except in that in 2008 only one aerial survey was conducted and this did not coincide with ground counts. - A total of 20 survey events were achieved in 2002/03, with a further 23 in 2003/04. - A total of four survey events were achieved in 2004/05; 9 in 2005/06; and 11 in 2006/07. - A total of 3 ground survey events and 1 aerial survey event were achieved in 2007/08. - A total of 2 ground based surveys events took place in 2008/09. - A total of 3 ground base survey events took place in 2009/10. The collation and analysis of this data has allowed the data to be formatted in a standard way and analysed against a standard background grid cell layer to produce statistics for the winter period for aerial counts and monthly statistics for ground counts. Detailed processing notes are available with the dataset.
