Lamprey Habitat Assessement in the River Usk 1999
The River Usk has been notified as a site of Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The three lamprey species which occur there are all listed in Annex II of the EU Species and Habitat Directive. The aim of this study was to investigate the status of lampreys in the Usk and to consider matters relevant to their conservation. Specific objectives of the study have been. - To define the characteristics of lamprey spawning and nursery habitat - To obtain and summarise information on the distribution of lampreys and lamprey spawning and nursery habitat in the Usk - To investigate the possibility of using information from RHS to predict the occurrence or lampreys in the Usk. - To make recommendations to assist with the monitoring and conservation of lampreys and their habitat. - To monitoring the status of lampreys required to comply with the reporting requirements of the Habitats Directive.
