Subtidal Habitat Diversity Layer (2010)
This layer was produced for Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) as part of the 'Identifying Marine Biodiversity Hotspots in Wales' project. Habitat diversity in the range is measured using biotope richness, biotope distinctness and the number of Biodiversity Action Plan priority features metrics. A hexagonal grid with a resolution of 1 km is used to present these metrics. The purpose of this data capture was to establish subtidal diversity from known data around the Welsh coastline, from mean high water to 12 nautical miles offshore. An assessment of the suitability of data was carried out, taking into account the source of the data, its age, spatial, taxonomic and methodological accuracy. Data were also graded on survey quality using the following three categories with respect to field surveyors: professional and academic; volunteer with expert ID; and volunteer. Derived confidence ratings were recorded in the metadata and low quality data were flagged and removed from subsequent analyses.

Biotope information for subtidal habitats was collated from the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway (Marine Recorder Snapshot), the MarLIN databases and the Data Archive for Seabed Species and Habitats data (DASSH). Biotope codes were matched against EUNIS codes. Biotopes in 97.06 format were manually matched to 04.05 biotopes prior to EUNIS translation and in some instances where the code could not be accurately matched to the same level, and a higher level code was assigned. A hexagonal grid was used because they offer the best alignment to complex features, such as the Welsh coastline. The optimal size was determined 20km2 for the subtidal region. Metrics used to represent marine biodiversity in Wales were biotope richness, biotope distinctness and the number of priority features. Each measure was calculated for each broad sampling method type, re-combined by hexagon, and presented as a separate layer on a continuous scale.
