2010 Countryside Council for Wales, Intertidal habitat diversity

This layer was produced for Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) as part of the 'Identifying Marine Biodiversity Hotspots in Wales' project. Habitat diversity in the intertidal range is measured using biotope richness, biotope distinctness and the number of Biodiversity Action Plan priority features metrics. A hexagonal grid with a resolution of 1 km is utilised to present these metrics. Biotope information for the Welsh intertidal zone was collated from CCW and is full coverage collected using standardised methods. The purpose of this data capture was to establish intertidal habitat diversity from known data. The Welsh coastline from the mean high water datum to the mean low water datum covering the intertidal zone.

Lineage

Species information were collated from the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway (Marine Recorder Snapshot), the MarLIN databases and the Data Archive for Seabed Species and Habitats data (DASSH). Biotope codes were matched against EUNIS codes. Biotopes in 97.06 format were manually matched to 04.05 biotopes prior to EUNIS translation and in some instances where the code could not be accurately matched to the same level, and a higher level code was assigned. A hexagonal grid was used because they offer the best alignment to complex features, such as the Welsh coastline. The optimal size was determined as 1 km2 for the intertidal region. Metrics used to represent marine biodiversity in Wales are biotope richness, biotope distinctness and the number of priority features. Each measure was calculated for each broad sampling method type, re-combined by hexagon, and presented as a separate layer on a continuous scale. Biotope information for the Welsh intertidal is full coverage and the data was collected using standardised methods, therefore the layer showing biotope diversity can be viewed with a high degree of confidence.
