Benthic Habitats: Maps of Sensitivity to Fishing Gears (Intertidal and Subtidal)
This dataset consists of intertidal and subtidal maps of the sensitivity of benthic fisheries habitats to fishing gear types within the Welsh Territorial Seas (high water to 12 nm offshore). Intertidal biotope mapping was carried out in order to determine the distribution and extent of seashore habitats, biological communities and species on the shores of Wales. Subtidal biotopes were predicted in HABMAP in order to act as a guide for marine scientists. The biotopes were converted to fisheries habitats in order to provide a means of assessing the sensitivity of benthic habitats to the effects of fishing gear types. The sensitivity of each fisheries habitat to each fishing gear and access was determined in order to provide a basis for management advice and fisheries regulation. The intertidal area consists of the whole of the Welsh coastline between the limits of the tidal rise and fall. The subtidal area consists of Welsh water out to 12 nm offshore which are within the Southern Irish Sea i.e. sections around the Severn in the south and the Dee in the north are not included. HABMAP modelling has been re-run to include these areas in the south and north and these biotopes are due to be included in the fisheries habitats maps in 2010.

Intertidal biotopes were mapped from 1996-2004 and converted to fisheries habitats and sensitivities between 2008 and 2009. Intertidal biotopes were predicted in 2008 - 2009 using seabed survey data collected in 2005 and a variety of other data sources dating back to 1963. Biotopes were converted to fisheries habitats and sensitivities between 2008 and 2009. Intertidal biotope mapping was carried out by a dedicated team of trained staff from Countryside Council for Wales (CCW). Surveyors followed a standard protocol and worked in pairs, with more and less experienced staff working together. Subtidal biotopes were predicted in between 2008 - 2009 using seabed survey data collected in 2005 and a variety of other data sources dating back to 1963. Biotopes were converted to fisheries habitats/sensitivities between 2008 and 2009. Spatial confidence scores were produced alongside the biotopes. These were split into areas of reasonable, low and poor confidence and used for fisheries habitats/sensitivity maps. The conversion from biotope to fisheries habitats was checked using expert judgement. Intertidal and subtidal- the sensitivity level applied to each combination of fisheries habitat and gear type/access was checked using expert judgement. Both the intertidal and subtidal conversions, from biotope to fisheries habitats, were checked using expert judgement. Fisheries habitats are produced from intertidal and subtidal biotope maps. These data layers will form part of a large project (Distribution of Fisheries Habitats and Fishing Activities to Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) features (Fisheries sensitivity maps and matrices), project 376).
- Additional Information
-
Fisheries habitats will be updated when the intertidal/subtidal biotope maps are updated, dependent on availability of resources. Intertidal biotopes will be updated in the long term (20 yrs) depending on resource availability. Subtidal biotopes are intended to be reviewed and updated via HABMAP as and when resources are available; if a significant amount of new data is collected that will make it a higher priority.

Parts of this dataset are sensitive and restricted - the dataset contains spatial information about sensitive habitats and species, and is undergoing further preparation for publication. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release, is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. Sensitive data may only be released under a NRW Restricted Release Licence. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Officer. It is not possible to separate the sensitive aspects of these datasets from the non-sensitive and therefore, the whole dataset will be restricted.
