Community Composition and Spatial Variation of Epifauna on the Horse Mussel Modiolus Reef (1999)
The purpose of this data capture was to examine spatial variation in epifaunal community composition in order to inform the development of a sensitive and cost-effective future monitoring strategy. Modiolus modiolus reef communities are comparatively rich in species and because they are also scarce in the UK it was considered important to monitor elements of community composition as an attribute that indicates the condition of these features. This dataset contains the results of in-situ sampling carried out by divers to try to determine the spatial variation in epifaunal community composition on the horse mussel reef off the coast of North Pen Llyn.

The following methodologies were used. Epifaunal recording replicate quadrat sampling position markers were deployed at stratified random positions along the axis of 7 reef 'crest' and 'trough' features. 6 rows were sampled by divers 'in-situ' and the 7th row was recorded using video. Divers were instructed to record as many species as possible on their recording slate and 'gridded' quadrats were used to assist in systematic counting or video recording. Each diver recorded the epifauna within a quadrat from as many rows (1-6) as possible in order to spread any errors associated with recording experience and inter-worker variability across rows.
