Effects of the Sea Empress oil spill on seaweed animals of the West Angle tide pools (1996-1997).
The results of a survey investigating the effects of oil pollution on the species richness of mobile fauna living in association with the algal turf in the West Angle Tide Pools. The study compares data collected from the polluted pools at West Angle with data collected from an unpolluted tide pool system in South Devon. The purpose of this data capture was to discover the effects of the Sea Empress oil spill on the fauna of the Coralline alga turf fringing the tide pool system at West Angle Bay, Pembrokeshire. Samples were collected over a 14 month period beginning in April 1996. Samples were taken in April, June, July and October 1996 and in March and June 1997. Samples were taken from the Devon site for April, June and July 1996.

Single samples of weed were collected from the pools by completely clearing an area approximately 10 cm by 10 cm using a paint scraper. Such samples were equivalent in volume to approximately 200 mls of weed. A single sample only was collected on each occasion to minimize the impact of this destructive sampling on the pool system. The samples were removed to a laboratory where the animals were carefully extracted from the weed, identified and counted. The volume of weed was determined by displacement. The lack of replication affects the reliability of results.
