Establishment of Permanent Quadrats at Skomer Marine Conservation Zone ( MCZ )
In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. A detailed survey of the shores of Skomer Marine Nature Reserve was carried out in 1982. This dataset contains the results of an exercise carried out in 1992 to repeat some of the littoral transects surveyed in 1982 and establish permanent quadrats at six sites. The purpose of this data capture was to: - to establish six permanent littoral monitoring sites at locations surveyed in the 1982 littoral survey. - survey the sites and where appropriate compare with the results of the 1982 littoral survey. - photograph the general appearance of the site for relocation purposes and photograph the quadrats at specified intervals along the transects at each site.

Six sites were selected from those originally surveyed in 1982 as being representative of very exposed, exposed and sheltered shores with north and south facing aspects. Permanent 0.25msq quadrats were marked at 1.2m vertical intervals using a compressed air drill, rawl plugs, brass screws and plastic discs or pitons and tapes, where the rock was too hard to drill. The abundance of animals and plant species were recorded using an abundance scale. Each quadrat was photographed using Kodak 64 or 200 ASA film and a close up taken of central decimetre square for subsequent counts of barnacle densities. Sketch maps were also created. The six sites were located around the shore of Skomer Marine Nature Reserve. Two transects on relatively sheltered boulder shores in North and South Havens, two on semi-exposed north and south facing shores at South Stream Cliff East and the Lantern and two on extremely exposed sites- south facing shore in the Wick and north facing shore opposite the Garland Stone. Initial reconnaissance was carried out on 26th July and the pilot transect at South Haven temporarily marked and surveyed on 30th July. All other transects were surveyed, marked and photographed during the period 12-18th of September. It was necessary to return on the 26th and 27th of September to survey quadrats at 0.6m on all transects during the low spring tide. This data forms part of the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas (URI: 24328).
