Intertidal Monitoring of Rockpools Following the Sea Empress Oil Spill 1996-97
Following the Sea Empress grounding in Milford Haven on February the 15th 1996, it was decided that a programme of monitoring was required to assess the impact of the oil on the coasts of Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. This dataset contains the results of rockpool monitoring carried out for a year following the spillage to assess community changed caused by the oil spill. The data collected was used to assess community changes caused by the oil spillage. It was thought rockpool monitoring was particular suitable for this purpose because rockpools are diverse in physical characteristics, occur at different height on shores, contain a range of biota, and are relatively easy to re-locate.

21 rockpools were studied at 10 locations. Surveys involved describing the pools in terms of position on shore, catchment area, level of exposure/shading. Mobile species were counted on approach. Surface dimensions of the pool were sketched and the habitat types within the pool mapped. Photographs were taken to to support the biological and habitat data and a complete species list for each pool was completed. Water samples were taken for chemical determination of hydrocarbon pollution. This dataset contributes to Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas, see separate metadata entry.
