Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) Sediment Interface Study 1994-1995
In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. A detailed survey of the shores of Skomer Marine Nature Reserve was carried out in 1982. This dataset comprises of the results of surveys at two sites within Skomer MNR during 1994 and 1995 designed to establish monitoring sites and collect baseline survey data on the macrofauna and megafauna of the sediment/water interface in shallow subtidal regions. The purpose of this data capture was to initiate monitoring of the sediment/water interface in shallow subtidal regions taking into account both macrofauna obtained from samples and visible megafauna.

At both survey sites three permanent markers were fixed to form a triangle - this provided two transects. At Low Point in-situ studies were carried out along the east side of the easternmost transect, whilst north of the Neck in-situ surveys were carried out on the west side of the westernmost transect. At both sites the same methodology was used- estimation and counting of visible fauna in quadrat areas adjacent to the transect; wide angle photographs taken at consecutive quadrat locations along the transect, and the sampling of a 1msq area. This sampling involved taking 25 close up photographs of the sediment interface and using a purpose built diver operated airlift to remove bottom sediment down to a depth of 10cm. Material collected was filtered and the larger material was retained for laboratory observation and identification. In the laboratory additional photographs were taken of sorted rock material to illustrate sessile biota present. This dataset also contributes to Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas, see separate metadata entry.
