Survey of the Littoral Zone of Great Britain
Between 1970 and 1980 NCC contracted a survey on the littoral zone of the coast of Great Britain. Former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) now part of Natural Resources Wales (NRW) holds a series of reports prepared under this contract as well as data in Marine Recorder. The purpose of this data capture was: - To record the distribution of habitats and the associated organisms in the littoral zone of Great Britain in order to verify existing information, fill gaps in knowledge, and ensure uniformity in the description. - To make a photographic record of the main types of littoral habitats and the associated plant and animals. - To develop suitable criteria for the assessment and selection of key areas in terms of their scientific and conservation value and assess the information collected by the criteria and so select key areas, and to zone the rest of the coast in relation to the key areas.

Surveys were timed wherever possible to coincide with good spring tides in the spring and autumn. Details of the habitat and species found down to Low Water Spring (LWS) were recorded using small cassette tape recorders or notebooks. As wide an area of shore as possible was investigated in order to include micro-habitats such as overhangs, pools and the under surfaces of boulders. Photographs were taken to show the topography of the shore, zonation, details of species assemblages, and the relation of the shore to the coast backing it. The abundance of species was roughly estimated in relation to the normal abundance of that species. Information on sites and records of species from published papers, reports, and various National recording schemes was also collated. The results of the south west Wales report contributed to the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas (PMSA)- see separate metadata entry and Marine Recorder survey '1976-78 Bartrop PMSA - South West Wales littoral zone survey' (MRCCW10000000035)
- Additional Information

The survey team consisted of experts from the Scottish Marine Biological Association and the Marine Biological Association. The number of shores that could be visited and the length of time spent at each site was limited by the small survey team (at first four, then six people).
