At each site, records were made of plants and animals present at each habitat encountered. Abundance scales were used to estimate the abundances of plant and animal species and all the information was later transferred to habitat forms and species checklists. Samples of pebbles and cobbles were collected for later identification of encrusting and cryptic species and a suction sampler was used at several sites to collect sediment infauna for later identification, using a quadrat of 0.075m2 and 10cm deep to collect replicate samples at each site.
