Sublittoral Monitoring Trials of North Pen Llyn 1998
The data was captured in order to assess the suitability of the biotope classification monitoring method trialled. A measure biotope richness as an attribute of north Pen Llyn reefs, was measured over three surveys transects between July and August 1998. Surveyors were experienced in Phase 2 survey methodology and each record was carefully re-examined by an experienced operator to ensure that data were comparable to those assigned to biotopes in the national classification, therefore were correctly assigned.

Fixed line transects were used in the following ways. A shot line was deployed from which divers reeled-out a 50 m tape from a pole. The pole was designed to measure a fixed transect width and in combination with the fixed 50 m travelled, limit the area surveyed. It was decided that the direction of deployments for the diver based transects would be random and that species and abundances were to be recorded in-situ using standard protocol. Divers were instructed to record the most conspicuous and characterising features of the biotope as opposed to recording all macroscopic organisms. Three broad trial zones were identified and in each zone between 20 and 30 random sampling points were generated using a random number generating program. There is a high confidence in this dataset. Surveyors were experienced in Phase 2 survey methodology and each record was carefully re-examined by an experienced operator to ensure that data were comparable to those assigned to biotopes in the national classification, therefore were correctly assigned. This trial was a precursor to the Across Wales Diving Monitoring Project (see metadata entry 109743).
