Marine Biological Survey of Bardsey Island 1977
The results of a survey of the littoral and sub-littoral regions around Bardsey Island carried out in 1977. Bardsey Island was being offered for sale in 1977 therefore this survey was initiated in order to gain knowledge of the littoral and sub-littoral surroundings of the island in case public access to the areas was denied by subsequent owners. The data captured was also used to detect any changes since previous surveys and to investigate whether the shores of Bardsey offered a suitable site for a Marine Nature Reserve.

Littoral survey- Intensive shore searches at specific sites and collections made along as much of the shoreline as possible to gain a general picture of the floral and faunal distribution. A subjective abundance scale was used to give general relative impression of species density by classifying organisms as 'abundant', 'common', 'occasional' and 'rare'. Sub-littoral survey- Before diving, potential sites were surveyed from a dinghy fitted with an inshore echosounder to find sites with a large depth range and varying topography. The positions of sites were fixed and the survey techniques used included- transect lines laid in order to investigate distribution of the prominent species in relation to depth, spot dives of 20 minutes searching time to cover as much of the coast as possible, and a towed underwater sledge to make a preliminary survey of a chosen swim line.
