Intertidal Monitoring Survey of the Effect of Parys Mountain Discharge around Amlwch, North Anglesey (2003)
The purpose of this data capture was to detect impacts of pumping discharge from the disused copper mines in Parys Mountain. Intertidal surveys conducted around Amlwch, North Anglesey, during the early part of 2003 to detect impacts of pumping discharge from the disused copper mines in Parys Mountain into the Afon Goch (North) that flows into the sea underneath the Great Lakes plant in Amlwch. In addition there is a undergraduate project that looked at concentrations of copper in Mytilus edulis samples. These projects are both unpublished. The purpose of this data capture was to detect impacts of pumping discharge from the disused copper mines in Parys Mountain.

Surveys were carried out on 3 dates prior to discharge of water from the Parys Mountain and again in June following discharge from the mine. Two types of survey were carried out: - Quadrat surveys to record presence and density of mollusc species. 60 randomly placed quadrats of 0.25m2 were recorded at 2 sites from the mid eulittoral zone. Counts of individual species of molluscs were recorded from within each quadrat. - Intertidal species recording mid and lower shores were undertaken in accordance with standard Marine Nature Conservation Review Phase 2 surveying methods (Davies et al, 2001) at the seven sites. In addition samples of limpets Patella vulgata, mussels, Mytilus edulis and seaweeds, Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus serratus and Mastocarpus stellatus, from all of the survey sites have been collected for tissue samples that will be analysed for copper concentration before and after discharge. Historical survey of the area conducted in the mid 1970's.
