Monitoring of Yellow Trumpet Anemone Parazoanthus axinellae at Pen Cristen, Bardsey Island
Yellow trumpet anemone Parazoanthus axinellae is primarily a south-western species, found at Bardsey Island and is close to the northern boundary of its known distribution at this location. This species has been selected as an attribute for monitoring the condition of reefs in the Special Area of Conservation (SACs). In 1999 an assessment of appropriate methods was made to look at monitoring the abundance and population structure of Parazoanthus axinellae and the erect branching sponge Axinella dissimilis. The trials focused on comparing different techniques to find the one that was most repeatable and therefore sensitive to population change. Trials took place at Pen Cristen, on Bardsey Island. Subsequent monitoring of the Parazoanthus axinellae assemblage has occurred annually at this location when weather conditions allow. The purpose of this data capture was to monitor the numerical abundance, percentage cover and distribution of individuals within the dominant Parazoanthus axinellae assemblage using a quantitative photographic approach. This will contribute to condition assessment of the reef feature in the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SAC.

The initial data was collected as part of the LIFE monitoring trials. Initial trials compared recording of quadrats by video and by still photography at one station at Pen Cristen. It was concluded that using still photography produced better, more repeatable results. Further details can be found in Marine Monitoring Report 2.The following standard procedure is now followed for data capture at Pen Cristen. 3 permanent stations have been set up, Notch face, Wrinkle face and Long face. These are marked with ring bolts around the perimeter. Divers string tape measures between the bolts in order to position a quadrat along the edge of the tape measure. A picture is taken of the sessile community within the quadrat. The quadrat is then moved to a position along the tape that overlaps the first quadrat by 100mm. The process is repeated to form a continuous photographic 'belt'. Further details can be found in Marine Monitoring report 25b, SOP 06. Images from each quadrat are analysed and the area covered by Parazoanthus recorded along with the number of polyps.
