Condition monitoring of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in Wales
Special Protection Areas (SPAs) are strictly protected sites classified in accordance with Article 4 of the EC Birds Directive, which came into force in April 1979. They are classified for rare and vulnerable birds (as listed on Annex I of the Directive), and for regularly occurring migratory species. Once sites have been designated, the country agencies work with owners, occupiers and others to secure their management and protection regime. One element of this work was a programme of species monitoring across the site. This is a collation of existing monitoring of bird species across SPAs. This work is often undertaken by contractors or partners such as the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and the RSPB. The RSPB have previously collated all the data on behalf of the former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW). The first round of assessments occurred between 2001-2006. Second round undertaken by funded partnership post within RSPB for assessment period 2007 - 2013.

The condition of features is monitored using site-specific performance indicators. The scope of performance indicators includes species across the terrestrial, freshwater, marine and coastal environments. With this in mind various methods of data capture was used depending on the site and type of feature being assessed.
