The fieldwork was carried out between 29 August and 3 September 1999.Different types of vegetation were distinguished from each other according to variation in flora and structure These vegetation types were allocated to communities and sub-communities of the National Vegetation Classification. The National Vegetation Classification (NVC) is a classification of natural and semi−natural vegetation types in the British Isles. The classification works on three levels. The first is the broad vegetation type denoted by upper−case letters such as H for heath, W for woodland and M for mire. The second level is the community. There are several within each broad vegetation type and they are denoted by numbers and names such as H18 Vaccinium myrtillus−Deschampsia flexuosa heath. The final level is the sub-community. These are divisions within communities. Each sub-community has a lower-case letter and a name, such as H18a Vaccinium myrtillus−Deschampsia flexuosa heath, Hylocomium splendens, Rhytidiadelphus loreus sub-community. NVC communities and sub-communities take their names from between one and three plant species which are characteristic of that NVC type in Great Britain as a whole. These are not necessarily the most common or conspicuous species in every example of the NVC type in question; the assignment of vegetation to an NVC type is based on the total flora.
