Cwm Idwal Surveillance data
This dataset currently contains the first year's recorded data following the establishment of a long-term vegetation surveillance system at Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve (NNR). An earlier programme of intensive surveillance was undertaken at Cwm Idwal during 1999-2004 in response to the long term exclusion of grazing. This current surveillance project involves the establishment of a new, less intensive surveillance programme based on just eleven of the original plots, which will be repeated at three year intervals. The dataset includes a summary of plot frequency data, summary statistics for each species/feature, digital photographs, general observations on the eleven plots and plot identification sketches. The purpose of this data capture was to inform large-scale restoration projects in other parts of the Welsh uplands and provide information on the effects of such management decisions for the restoration of upland sites.

This work was commissioned following an earlier programme of intensive surveillance between 1999 and 2004 (see separate metadata entry entitled 'Cwm Idwal vegetation change surveillance project 1999-2004'). A number of the original landscape photographs have also been replicated, whilst a further series of additional views have also been taken from new vantage-points. All photography employed a Digtial SLR camera of 6.0 megapixels resolution. Eleven plots from the 1999-2004 surveillance projects were chosen either because they were located in transitional zones between vegetation types or in localities where changes were expected or desired. The eleven plots employ the same quadrat locations as those originally used. Presence/absence of selected species were recorded as were occurrences of bare ground, exposed peat, rock, litter, sheep/goat droppings and any other notable feature using a standard recording card. The data from these cards were then entered into excel spreadsheets. At least two photographs were taken of each plot and one of every quadrat recorded. Differential GPS was used to records plot and quadrat positions.
