Some are from structured surveys e.g. the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) surveys of woodland Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), whilst others are ad-hoc recording events. The records can include site name, grid references, aspect, slope, altitude, area, species lists, height, cover, age class abundance etc. The purpose of this data capture was to gather compositional and structural information about woodlands; to gain an understanding of their species diversity and conservation importance; to influence site designation and to identify future research and survey needs.
