This lead to considerable concern that seabird rehabilitation programmes are of low conservation value and may even prolong the suffering of the rescued birds. The study aimed to: - Calculate the survival rates of oiled, cleaned and released guillemots, - Compare these with the natural survival rates of guillemots which have not been oil, cleaned and released, - Assess whether the survival of rehabilitated birds has increased in recent years as cleaning techniques have improved, - Critically examine the quality of the available data and make recommendations for future improvements.
