Ecological impacts of shoreline clean-up during the Sea Empress Oil spill
This dataset contains the results of an assessment of the effects of shoreline clean-up activity following the Sea Empress oil spill, concentrating on conspicuous species of rocky shore algae and animals, coastal vegetation and signs of physical disturbance. The Sea Empress ran aground on the 15th of February 1996. Shoreline clean-up activities at over 100 sites around south-west Wales began on the 16th of February and were scaled down gradually from July 1996 through to summer 1997. The purpose of this data capture was to carry out: - An assessment of the environmental impacts of each individual clean up technique; - Compare the impacts with those described from previous spills and experimental studies; - Make recommendations on the suitability and application of techniques in different situations; - Assess the overall impact of the clean-up activity, in relation to the impacts of the oil pollution itself; and, - Make recommendations for future monitoring and studies of the effects of clean-up activities.

23 sites across south-west Wales were surveyed. A field programme was developed in the light of information available on the extent of oiling; the condition of the shore biota before, during and immediately after the incident; the clean-up techniques used and the availability of comparable habitats. Early observations involved taking photographs, video and detailed notes at numerous sites. Desk studies were undertaken to review the information collected on the effects of the clean-up activities on the biota of the shores and to collate detailed information about the clean-up activity on each site. Field studies involved two types of sites: General observation sites- general observations on the state of the shore and biological communities in and adjacent to clean up sites were recorded and photographs taken of any evidence of physical or biological damage. Detailed study sites- notes on the degree and type of oiling and the dates and type of clean up applied were taken as were time series photographs and invertebrate abundance measurements.
