Infauna of heavily oiled shores in Milford Haven and Carmarthen Bay following the Sea Empress oil spill
The sediment shores of Pembrokeshire are of many types, from coarse sand, storm beaches to the soft fine muds of the Milford Haven Estuary. Following the grounding of the Sea Empress it became obvious that several sediment shores, particularly in the lower reaches off the Milford Haven, were vulnerable to serious damage as a results of large quantities of crude oil spilt. The physical characteristics of beaches determine to a large extent the types and range of biota present. This dataset includes the results of an assessment of the effects of the Sea Empress oil spill on the infauna of sediment shores in Milford Haven and Carmarthen Bay. The purpose of this data capture was to carry out biological and hydrocarbon analyses to assess the impact of the oil spill incident on sediment infauna.

Post spill survey at a selection of damaged sites was undertaken as a matter of urgency. Once each survey station had been located in the field, samples for biological analyses (0.01m2 steel corers used to take samples to a depth of 15cm, four replicates per sampling station) and hydrocarbon analyses (samples taken using a solvent washed, stainless steel scoop and transferred into solvent washed aluminium containers) were taken. Initially sites were sampled intensively, once per month, in order to record any abrupt changes in faunal communities related to the pollution event. The time interval was later extended to three months. Biological data were recorded on a spreadsheet and examined using the PRIMER software package designed for the assessment of change in marine communities using various types of statistical analyses. Analysis of total hydrocarbon concentration present was carried out. Previous work was undertaken in 1995 by Rostron, and four stations were also established at West Angle, a site close to the grounded tanker, previously surveyed in 1969 by Withers 1972.
