It is included as 'vulnerable' in the Red Data Book for British Lichens and is included on schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act. It is a species particularly sensitive to sulphur dioxide air pollution. This dataset includes the results of a resurvey of Teloschistes flavicans in South Pembrokeshire following the Sea Empress oil spill in February 1996. A comprehensive survey of all known Teloschistes flavicans sites was undertaken in Pembrokeshire in 1994. It was considered likely that the lichen might be detrimentally affected by air-borne pollutants arising from the Sea Empress oil spill and consequently a resurvey was commissioned. Photographs were taken of location and where possible salient features were photographed and/or marked with yellow enamel paint. Population density of small populations was estimated using a 20x30cm quadrat with 100 intersections and recording number of squares containing Teloschistes. Permanent quadrat locations, 20 x 30cm, were established on Ramsey, Skomer, and Manorbier- quadrat locations marked with yellow enamel paint. Photographs of situation and quadrat were taken.
