Littoral Monitoring in Permanent Quadrats Established at West Angle Bay and Manorbier 1996-1997
The Sea Empress oil tanker ran aground at the entrance to Milford Haven on the 15th of February 1996 and proceeded to spill over 70,000 tonnes of crude oil into the sea. The purpose of data capture of this data capture was to investigate the changes in community structure following the oil spill and identify any differences between the two sites monitored. Two permanent quadrats established prior to the spill at West Angle Bay and Manorbier Bay were both severely impacted however neither were subjected to cleaning. This provided an ideal opportunity for pre and post spill monitoring, the results of which are presented in this dataset.

Permanent quadrats (50 x 50cm) were established at West Angle Bay on February 1995 and Manorbier Bay in February 1996. The quadrats were marked permanently on the rocks at 0.6m intervals from Chart Datum to the top of the supralittoral zone. All quadrats were photographed and detailed assessments of the abundance of plants and animals were made and recorded on standard data sheets. In addition, at West Angle bay the numbers, positions and sizes of limpets were recorded whilst at Manorbier numbers of Patella in quadrats were studies and barnacle counts were made. This dataset contributed to the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas, see separate metadata entry.
