Analysis of seabird blood samples following the Sea Empress Oil Spill.
The results of a study that used haematological techniques to investigate the subtle sub-lethal effects of oil on seabirds (razorbills, guillemots and shags) following the Sea Empress oil spill. Data includes summary statistics for the measured blood parameters. The purpose of this data capture was to investigate subtle sub-lethal effects of oil on seabirds. Blood samples were collected from birds at two sites in Wales- Skomer Island and Middleholm, Pembrokeshire, and one site in Scotland- Isle of May, Firth of Forth.

Blood samples were collected from birds at a potentially affected site in Pembrokeshire and at control sites in Scotland. Samples were stored at 4 degrees Celsius until processed at the laboratory. Haematological techniques such as red cell counts, haematocrit measurements (proportion of the blood sample that comprises blood cells), and the determination of the proportion of reticulocytes (immature red blood cells) were employed. The only data associated with this project is held within the report.
