Baseline survey for the Afon Teifi restoration project
The Afon Teifi is the longest river to have its course entirely within Wales. Its conservation value is high, the entire river having Special Area of Conservation (SAC) status. Not far below its source in Teifi Pools, the river traverses the Cors Caron National Nature Reserve, meandering its way between the raised bogs for which the reserve is renowned. Parts of this sinuous course were canalized about a century ago, creating sections of unusually straight and deep channel between steep clay banks. It is proposed to restore these reaches of the river to their original course, turning the canalized sections into new lentic water bodies. This dataset includes the results of a baseline survey conducted in 2006-2007 which focussed on sediments, invertebrates and fish. Sediment sampling was conducted to determine the extent of metal contamination of the material that would be excavated in the course of the restoration. The purpose of this data capture is to contribute to the evidence base that would be essential to completing a fully documented restoration project. Sediment sampling was conducted to determine the extent of metal contamination of the material that would be excavated in the course of the restoration. The risk of metal contamination exists due to historic mining in the upper part of the catchment. Invertebrate sampling aimed to establish the potential for improvement of the river's conservation value by comparing the invertebrate assemblages of the uncanalized reaches with the canalized sections. It also aimed to establish the conservation value of the existing pond in the original channel, providing both a measure of the potential loss and a benchmark for the development of the replacement ponds in the canalized sections post-restoration. Survey of fish in an upstream uncanalized reach and in two canalized sections aimed to provide a baseline for the assessment of the effect of restoration on the suitability of the river for fish.

Sediment samples: taken in Jan '06 as intact cores on transects at 14 points along the former river course. Samples were bulked for analysis of each transect with individual samples retained for further analysis if appropriate. Samples also taken from the existing riverbed at two points above and below where realignment is proposed; sediment recently deposited on river banks (various locations) was also collected. Pond invertebrates: one sample collected on 11/07/06 from each of three sites on the pond by methods recommended in the National Pond Survey Protocol. River invertebrates: Samples collected from 9 sites on the Teifi on 11-12/04/06 and 18/10/06. The midstream samples consisted of four 30-second kick samples which together included as many varieties of sediment type as were represented at the site. The east and west bank samples collected from the face of the bank by kicking in deeper water or by net sweeping nearer the water surface. Two 15 second samples were collected from each bank at each site. River fish: All the samples collected on 17/07/06. Fish were collected using hand seining and hand netting. Fish sampled were passed to an assistant located on the bank for identification, photographing, and standard length measuring. All fish were returned to the river.
