Autecological study of Thick Top Shell, Osilinus lineatus (Monodonta lineata), in the area affected by the Sea Empress oil spill (1996 and 1997).
After the oil spill from the Sea Empress investigations were initiated into the biota of many of the habitats affected. One of the species known to be susceptible to oil pollution, that had been studied previously and that would not be adequately investigated by the proposed investigations was the toothed or thick top shell Osilinus lineatus, an animal commonly found on shores in western Britain. Data collected in order to establish the population age and size structure at each study site and allow an assessment of the impact the Sea Empress oil spill has had on these populations of Osilinus linaetus. As of 1 April 2013, the Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales and Forestry Commission Wales became Natural Resources Wales / Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru.

In August 1996 six sites were visited in five days to set up sample populations of Osilinus lineatus to investigate the population size, distribution and age structure at sites where such studies had previously been carried out albeit over a decade ago. This first fieldwork in 1996 established that it would be necessary to allow one tide per site and that realistically after the end of August that means one day for each site because of shortening day length. A simple Lincoln index, mark-release-recapture technique was used to estimate the size of the population from which the survey samples were taken. In September 1997 all of the sites were revisited to sample the population, and where reasonably large samples could be found, they were marked and released. Fieldwork in 1997 included additional checks on 1996 recruitment as the growing animals became easier to spot as they changed their habits and moved around into less cryptic micro habitats. Between 1982 and 1983 a programme of experimental field work was conducted to complement the fixed, interrupted, belt transect monitoring studies of rocky shores in Milford Haven. The only data associated with this project is held within the report.
