(1982a). All birds were dissected unwashed and the head, left wing and a tarsus were detached and washed before measurement. All birds were dissected for sexing and to assess condition by scoring subcutaneous and visceral fat, from none (0) to heavy (3) (Hope Jones et al. 1982a). Contents of stomachs and oesophagi were examined for a different sub-sample to that used for pathology. Contents were examined with a binocular microscope at 10 x magnification and a scanning electron microscope where necessary. Food remains were compared with reference collections for identification. Non-food items were also recorded. Increased monitoring effort and impact assessment following the Sea Empress oil spill.
